Tunnel / Steering Grid Combination Bow Thruster

To enable a bow thruster to be used as an auxiliary propulsion system, Kalkman has developed a special type of thruster that can actually propel the vessel.
This system combines the characteristics of a Tunnel Bow Thruster and a Steering Grid Bow Thruster in one compact and versatile design.
A vertically mounted propeller operates within a tunnel and directs the water flow through a 360° rotatable steering grid, providing thrust in any direction – not only transverse, but also forward and astern.
When operating astern, the steering grid also functions as a rudder, offering additional control at low speeds or during emergency propulsion.
The combination thruster is:
Suitable for operation in shallow water
Usable as an emergency or auxiliary propulsion system
Effective at full sailing speed
Available in power ratings up to approximately 750 kW
With this unique development, Kalkman offers a system that combines full 360° thrust, maximum reliability, and flexibility – ensuring safety and manoeuvrability under all operating conditions.
